NYU Langone surgeons pave the way for xenotransplantation with a successful combined heart pump and gene-edited pig kidney transplant.
In a landmark surgery, NYU Langone Health has performed the first combined mechanical heart pump and gene-edited kidney transplant surgery on a patient with a special profile. Lisa Pisano, a resident of New Jersey, was not a candidate for a heart and kidney transplant because she had several health conditions. Pisano was facing heart failure and end-stage kidney disease. But doctors at NYU Langone Health were able to approve her for the groundbreaking surgery.
“Since these pigs can be bred and do not require cloning like more-complex gene edits, this is a sustainable, scalable solution to the organ shortage. If we want to start saving more lives quickly, using fewer modifications and medications will be the answer.”Surgeons first implanted an LVAD , a heart pump used on patients waiting for a transplant or unable to receive one. This made the surgery even more complicated because an LVAD is a mechanical pump.
