For the first time ever the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center has a college graduate, but it’s not without controversy.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -
According to juvenile court records, the recent grad is accused of murder and aggravated robbery. He’s one of five defendants charged with the crimes in connection to a deadly shooting that happened in Slavic Village in 2022. “I think that it’s important to give opportunities, so if and when they return to the community, they are able to be law-abiding citizens, get jobs in the community, and maybe not have to face some of the challenges that they did while they were in the community before they came into our care,” Wainwright said.
“Trying to get the understanding from outside professors and for them to be able to willing to work with us, like for deadlines as well as you know, helping him navigate and learn how to use a computer, being around the other residents in the facility, you know, everyone has a lot of emotions being in here,” explained Elizabeth Jernejcic, activity coordinator and supervisor at the detention center.
