ANCHORAGE , AK - As high pressure in the Interior converges with low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska , strong winds are expected to continue in Southcentral overnight, as that same low brings the first heavy snow of the season into Southeast.
As of Sunday morning, the National Weather Service recorded 9.6 inches of snow in Juneau, passing the previous December 7 record set back in 1975 for 7.2 inches of snow. Higher elevation areas reported up to 23 inches of snow, while Haines measured 12 to 13 inches of snow. Heavy snow is expected to continue through Sunday and linger into the overnight hours with several more inches of snow expected. For Southcentral, a First Alert Day continues for today as the last bit of hurricane force winds begin to recede. Strong winds up to 50 miles per hour will remain likely through the Kenai Peninsula and up to 75 miles per hour into the Mat-Su Valley. High wind warnings and advisories across Southcentral remain in effect through Monday afternoon.24/7 Alaska Weather: Get access to live radar, satellite, weather cameras, current conditions, and the latest weather forecast here.
