The Cowboys will move forward, looking for their fourth defensive coordinator in as many years.

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus stands on the sideline during the second half of an NFL game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025, in Philadelphia. The Eagles defeated the Cowboys 24-20.

Eberflus, in his first year as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, was in charge of a defense that allowed the most points in the league and gave up the second-most yards in franchise history. The Cowboys also“After reviewing and discussing the results of our defensive performance this season, though, it was clear that change is needed,”said in a statement. “This is the first step in that process and we will continue to review as it applies to reaching our much higher expectations.”traded Eberflus’ best player, pass rusher Micah Parsons, to Green Bay a week before the season opener. Early in the season, starting cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland scoffed at playing zone. Both players didn’t finish the season. DiggsThe Cowboys had problems generating a pass rush and had communication problems with the linebackers and secondary. Eberflus started this season making two different calls for the secondary that required more communication than what the corners and safeties were used to. Eberflus, after realizing the communication problems, decided to make one call for the entire secondary. The team made trade deadline deals for defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and linebacker Logan Wilson to help, but it was short-lived during a midseason three-game win streak.Eberflus changed his vantage point of how he called the game in the final three weeks of the season, moving from the sidelines to the coach’s box. The Cowboys allowed 30.3 points per game with Eberflus in the coach’s box.“I love Flus,” Williams said before the firing. “I haven’t been here to know him from a personal standpoint, the defensive scheme from a defensive standpoint, I think was very, very good. Very smart. I think as players, we had a lot of hand in the pot to kinda execute and do the things that we can do. At the end of the day, man, around the NFL, around the world, Cover 3 is Cover 3, man is man and Cover 2 is Cover 2. You got to win your one-on-ones in all aspects of the game, and as players, you got to compete.”Now the Cowboys move forward, looking for their fourth defensive coordinator in as many years.Whoever is hired, the Cowboys also need to revamp a defense that does possess some solid pieces, including Williams, LB DeMarvion Overshown, DT Kenny Clark, Bland, CB Shavon Revel, DT Osa Odighizuwa, and DE Donovan Ezeiruaku.should get contract offers. After DE Dante Fowler’s talks with Schottenheimer during Monday’s exit meetings, he could be offered a deal to return.
