In the NBA, it's rarely hard to fire a coach. Finding the right one is incredibly difficult.
That has been one of my main arguments for keeping Bickerstaff. He did take the Cavs from the depth of 22 victories and no playoff hope to records of 44-38, 51-31 and 48-34.
Bickerstaff was with the Cavs for 4½ seasons, the sixth-longest tenure with their current team of any NBA coach. In this league, the life span of the average coach is about 2½ seasons.in the last two years by two different teams – the Lakers and the Suns. He won the 2020 NBA title in “The Bubble” with LeBron James. He took the Pacers to the Eastern Conference finals in 2013 and 2014.
Having watched Altman work and grow on the job since he took over in the summer of 2017, I’m confident he did his research. I don’t think this was an impulsive move. Washington is looking for a coach. That’s another messed-up franchise, much like Cleveland was in 2020. I’d hire Bickerstaff right now to coach the Wizards. He is a team builder. He can put in a defensive system that makes a team competitive. He is a good man, which means a lot in tough situations. Many fans said Bickerstaff spent too much time complaining to officials. I tend to agree.
His lack of basic out-of-bounds plays was frustrating. I’m sure he has some, but it’s up to the coach to demand they are run correctly. Just throwing the ball in-bounds to the best player and watching him go one on one wastes chances to score easy baskets on those in-bounds plays.
