Fireworks-related injuries up 16% with 74 new cases

Based on the agency’s latest surveillance report, the 211 fireworks injuries recorded as of 6 a.m. of January 2 were 16% higher than the 182 cases recorded in 2021, but 30% lower compared to the five-year average of 300 cases during the same period.

Twenty-five were logged from the Western Visayas, and 20 from Central Luzon.

There were 13 cases in the Ilocos Region; 11 each in Calabarzon and Bicol Region; eight in Cagayan Valley, six in Central Visayas; and five in Soccsksargen. Four cases were logged in the Cordillera Administrative Region ; two each in Mimaropa and Davao Region; and one each in Zamboanga Peninsula and Northern Mindanao.

Of the victims, 76 sustained injuries on the hand, 59 on the eye, 29 on the legs, 25 on the head, and 23 on the forearm or arm.According to the DOH, 109 of the injuries occurred on the street, while 94 happened at home.At least 167 of them were males aged 11 months to 80 years old. The top fireworks involved were kwitis, boga, 5-star, and fountain. Of these, only boga was considered an illegal firework, and this caused injuries to 27 people.
