The latest 7.1-magnitude earthquake near Ridgecrest, California, comes a day after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the area. That temblor has produced more than 1,400 aftershocks, scientists said
The latest earthquake Friday struck 11 miles northeast of Ridgecrest, according to the US Geological Survey. It was 10 times stronger than Thursday's 6.4 -magnitude earthquake, also centered near Ridgecrest, a seismologist said. In Ridgecrest, multiple fires broke out Friday and injuries were reported, according to Kern County spokeswoman Megan Person. The county has activated an emergency operations center, and nearly 2,000 people are without power, officials said.

It lasted longer and was more rolling," he said. While there are no reports of major gas leaks or fatalities, there have been a lot of ambulance calls and medical aide calls for help, Kern County Fire Department Chief David Witt said.
