Firefly Aerospace's first lunar landing mission, Blue Ghost, successfully touched down on the moon, carrying NASA instruments for scientific research.
Firefly Aerospace achieved a significant milestone in lunar exploration with the successful landing of its Blue Ghost lander on the moon. The company, collaborating with NASA under the agency's Commercial Lunar Payload Services ( CLPS ) initiative, announced the soft touchdown early Sunday morning. Blue Ghost gracefully touched down at 3:34 AM ET in Mare Crisium, a region of the lunar surface.
While not the first commercial spacecraft to land on the moon, Blue Ghost and the NASA instruments it carries are poised to make valuable contributions to our understanding of the lunar environment. The lander is expected to remain operational for approximately 14 Earth days, capturing high-definition images throughout its mission. The team's objectives include documenting lunar sunrise and sunset, capturing imagery of a total lunar eclipse, and observing the behavior of levitating lunar dust. Additionally, NASA is utilizing instruments onboard Blue Ghost to test drilling and sample collection capabilities. The mission, launched on January 15th, reached lunar orbit approximately a month later. Firefly's team has already transmitted over 27 GB of scientific data back to Earth from the journey. Shea Ferring, Firefly's Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the significance of the mission's success, stating that it has already delivered the most science data to date for the NASA CLPS initiative. On social media, Firefly shared an image of Blue Ghost's shadow on the lunar surface, marking the successful touchdown and expressing excitement for the next two weeks of operations
