Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lander made a successful touchdown on the moon, marking a significant milestone for the private space industry and NASA's commercial lunar delivery program.

Firefly Aerospace 's Blue Ghost lander successfully touched down on the moon Sunday, marking a significant milestone for the burgeoning private space industry. This achievement comes as several companies are vying to establish a lunar presence ahead of upcoming astronaut missions.

The Blue Ghost lander, carrying a drill, vacuum, and other scientific instruments for NASA, autonomously descended from lunar orbit and landed on the slopes of an ancient volcanic dome in Mare Crisium, an impact basin on the moon's northeastern edge. Confirmation of the successful touchdown arrived at Firefly's Mission Control in Austin, Texas, 225,000 miles away from the lunar surface.\'You all stuck the landing. We're on the moon,' exclaimed Will Coogan, Firefly's chief engineer for the lander. This upright and stable landing makes Firefly, a startup founded a decade ago, the first private company to successfully land a spacecraft on the moon without any mishap. Only five countries have achieved this feat: Russia, the United States, China, India, and Japan.\Half an hour after landing, Blue Ghost began transmitting images from the lunar surface, including a selfie slightly obscured by the sun's glare. This marks a significant step towards establishing a lunar economy driven by private businesses, as envisioned by NASA's commercial lunar delivery program. This program aims to encourage competition among private companies while simultaneously scouting the lunar landscape before the return of astronauts later this decade. Blue Ghost, named after a rare US species of fireflies, is designed for stability with its squat four-legged structure, standing 6-foot-6 (2 meters) tall and 11 feet (3.5 meters) wide. Launched from Florida in mid-January, the lander carried 10 NASA experiments, with the space agency investing $101 million for the delivery and an additional $44 million for the scientific instruments onboard. The Blue Ghost mission is part of a growing trend of private companies venturing into lunar exploration. Intuitive Machines, another Houston-based company, is scheduled to land its lander on the moon Thursday, aiming for a location just 100 miles (160 kilometers) from the south pole. ispace, a Japanese company, is also planning a lunar landing in three months, after its previous attempt ended in a crash in 2023. NASA acknowledges that not all missions will be successful but views these endeavors as crucial for advancing lunar exploration and scientific research
