Firefighters are warning of a rise in house fires caused by bathroom heat lamps being left on or not regularly maintained. An Adelaide family were lucky to escape their burning home in Happy Valley when their heat lamp sparked a blaze about 10pm on Monday. Neighbours helped the family of three get out safely before they were treated for smoke inhalation. “ were shooting out of the roof at least 3m in some spots and the roof was glowing,” neighbour Erich Neubauer said.

He warned other families to not leave lamps or bathroom exhaust fans on, and to regularly check them. “It’s an area we don’t really take notice of — it accumulates dust due to lack of maintenance, and people leaving their heat lamps on can contribute to a fire starting in that area,” he said. French said he recently inspected his home appliances and found they were at risk of igniting.
