Aided for another day by favorable winds, firefighters made more progress against a massive tundra wildfire that had threatened several Southwest Alaska communities.

Operations Briefing Tuesday, June 14 - Operation Section Chief Karen Scholl gives an update on the #EastForkFire and the #ApoonPassFire. Karen will give an overview on the current effort to contain the west flank of the fire, protect the nearby villages and the firing operation initiated Monday, June 13. As a friendly reminder, a Temporary Flight Restriction is in place. Pilots should check current NOTAMs for updated TFR information.

Persistent dry conditions have caused the fires to spread rapidly in Southwest Alaska. The East Fork Fire was started by lightning on May 31. A spell of favorable cool weather conditions could continue into early next week in the area, but officials said there may be slight warming on Wednesday accompanied by variable winds.No mandatory evacuations have been ordered, but residents in St. Mary’s and Pitkas Point were told to be prepared to leave if conditions worsen. About 145 people had voluntarily left St.
