The San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association and city officials are still far apart on their wage offers for a new labor contract.
The firefighters' union on Tuesday scaled back its pay demands in contract talks with the city of San Antonio, putting up a counteroffer that its leader called a “pretty significant economic move” — which amounted to a slight reduction of its previous proposal. It’s still millions of dollars apart from the city. After making the concession, San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association President Joe Jones had anticipated that city negotiators would budge, too.
San Antonio’s salary talks with its fire union are going nowhere fast They didn’t. Deputy City Manager María Villagómez, who’s leading the city’s team of negotiators, said she wouldn’t “give a comprehensive response” to their proposed wage changes until both sides reconvene on Aug. 23. Her move left Jones “a little lost,” he said, because the union’s latest proposal still puts public safety spending below 66% of the general fund budget.
Fire union wants 34% pay increase over three year period; city says it’s ‘not affordable’ But as the city faces a $10 million budget deficit over the next two fiscal years, that financial policy is not the only “driver” behind the city’s salary offer, Villagómez said. “It’s two factors: it’s how much cash we have available to work with and also the financial policies.” The general fund pays for city employee salaries, street repairs and many other basic city services.
San Antonio firefighters union and city to start contract talks — without guerrilla warfare this time The contract talks have been ongoing since late February, and both sides are staring down deadlines for hashing out a new contract. The firefighters union’s current contract expires Dec. 31.
