Two firefighters have been treated for injuries while battling an out-of-control bushfire, with one airlifted to a Perth hospital with serious burns. It is understood one male firefighter was seriously burnt while another received injuries while on the fire ground in an area around Wedge Island, Cooljarloo and Nambung on Wednesday. The area is currently within an emergency alert zone, with the blaze remaining out-of-control and uncontained.
Incident controller Andrew Duckworth told the ABC the fire was sparked by a car crash on Monday morning before it engulfed nearby bushland. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the blaze was first reported at 10.54am. Cervantes Primary School has been closed and residents within the emergency zone have been urged to leave for a safer place. More than 60 firefighters— including both career and volunteer personnel — were battling the blaze on Wednesday.
