“I really do love the team effort that you have to have within the fire department. No fire is going out without the team.”

So in August 2001, a month before the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center that killed nearly 3,000 people, she quit her job while waiting to get hired by the JCFD.

There are now 17 women in the Jersey City Fire Department, including her sister, Francesca Zappella, who became a firefighter two years ago. “I made up my mind early as a recruit in the academy that failure was not going to be an option for me.”“I think that’s the most important division within the fire department because you need properly trained firefighters so that everyone can go home safe; and everyone can perform the duties that save lives in the city of Jersey City.”

“As the most diverse city in the nation and the largest municipal fire department in the state, we recognized early on that we needed to add more diverse representation throughout all ranks and so I am especially proud to swear in Deputy Chief Zappella as she is a true trailblazer and an inspiration to our youth in Jersey City and beyond,” Fulop said.
