Firefighters still battling large N.J. warehouse blaze

A large overnight fire in Mercer County damaged a warehouse on the 500 block of Whitehead Road in Hamilton.One firefighter was injured and area residents were evacuated after a large fire heavily damaged a warehouse in Mercer County early Thursday, officials said.

While visible flames were no longer shooting from the former Goodall Rubber building on Whitehead Road in Hamilton, the fire had not been declared under control at 10 a.m. but is contained to one building, the chief of staff for Mayor Jeff Martin said. At the peak of the firefighting efforts, 26 units from Hamilton and 13 other municipalities were battling the blaze as massive flames were seen on two stories of the warehouse.Large plums of smoke rise from a warehouse in Hamilton after a warehouse caught fire overnight.Part of the building was heavily damaged and will have to be demolished, officials said.

Firefighters remained on the scene late Thursday morning and officials said the intersection of Whitehead Road and Sweetbriar Avenue would be closed through Friday morning’s commute. One firefighter was brought to an area hospital to be treated for injuries not considered life-threatening, officials said. The state Department of Environmental Protection detected no air quality concerns after performing tests.Earlier, two unions representing the Hamilton firefighters said the following roads were closed: the area near Sloan Avenue and Klockner Road; Whitehead Road in the area of Route 1; Whitehead Road near Third Avenue; and Assunpink Boulevard.
