Safmax's new flame-retardant material can withstand high temperatures maintaining its structure without deforming, shrinking, or melting.

A Chinese company has showcased new types of fabrics that can withstand extreme temperatures. Some of the fabric materials presented were waterproof and windproof while remaining breathable.Safmax presented these advanced fabrics at the second Public Security Tech Expo in Lianyungang, China.

The company’s new flame-retardant material can withstand temperatures up to 2,192 degree Fahrenheit . This fabric can maintain its structure without deforming, shrinking, or melting. This type of fabric can be used in firefighting suits and fire blankets to isolate airflow during battery fires in new energy vehicles.Effective and convenient solution The material is claimed to be the most effective and convenient solution to tackle fires. In recent years, Flame-retardant cotton fabrics have been made using various flame retardants, including phytic acid , ammonium polyphosphate , and diphenylphosphine .Safmax’s nano-membrane fabrics presented at the event are claimed to be waterproof and windproof. Although these materials were perfectly breathable.Nano-membrane fabric Jiang Huangsen, CTO of Safmax, revealed that nano-membrane material can be applied to ordinary fabric with a thickness of just one percent of human hair. Some researchers have recently developed flame-retardant, hydrophobic, high-strength, breathable cotton fabric by dual covalent crosslinking of amino-containing siloxane segments, phosphorus-containing monomers with several reaction sites, and hydroxyl-rich cellulose segments.Although, Jiang Huangsen didn’t reveal the fabric material’s specifications.Flame-resistant fibersSome flame-retardant fabrics are made either by adding inherent flame-resistant fibers, such as modacrylic, or by treating flammable fabrics like cotton with chemicals. Chemical treatments can involve reactive finishes, where the retardant bonds to the fiber, or additive finishes, where it’s deposited on or coated onto the fabric. In some methods, these processes work by disrupting the combustion cycle, either by charring the fabric, releasing flame-suppressing gases, or creating an insulating layer. In conventional methods, firefighters’ dress materials are normally made by combining advanced, multi-layered fabrics engineered for heat, flame, and moisture resistance. The outer layer is often an aramid fiber like Nomex, which carbonizes rather than melting in heat. A moisture barrier protects against water and chemicals, while a thermal barrier, often a quilted fabric, provides insulation. These layers, sometimes incorporating fibers like Kevlar for strength, are then sewn together to create the complete protective garment, according to experiments.Water cannot pass through the nano-membrane fabricWhile showcasing the nano-membrane material, Huangsen demonstrated that water cannot pass through the nano-membrane fabric and yet air is quickly released. This helps to make fabric waterproof while being breathable. The futuristic fabrics that protect those who protect us pic.twitter.com/36jh703POT— CGTN September 18, 2025Also featured was a foldable police dog kennel that can be quickly unfolded into a sturdy structure within minutes, supporting up to 200 kilograms and facilitating rapid deployment of mobile command units. Exhibitors showcased cutting-edge fabric technologies and portable public safety equipment to enhance operational efficiency and safety, reported CGTN.
