Legendary screenwriter Damon Lindelof reveals he was fired from Star Wars' Rey Skywalker movie and explains why. Read on for more details.
Star Wars finally returns to theaters after a 7-year hiatus this weekend with The Mandalorian and Grogu, but that doesn't mean it's been an easy road.
Lucasfilm has garnered a fair amount of backlash from fans on all sides for its recent habit of announcing too many projects that languish in development hell for years. Some examples include James Mangold's Jedi origin story, Taika Waititi's mysterious Star Wars project, and perhaps the most high profile of them all, Daisy Ridley's Rey Skywalker spin-off tentatively titled Star Wars: New Jedi Order.
First announced in April 2023 with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached to direct, the film would take place after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker and follow Rey Skywalker as she works to rebuild the Jedi Order now that the First Order has been vanquished. Even before it was revealed Disney passed on a Kylo Ren spin-off titled The Hunt for Ben Solo, the prospect of a movie that takes place after the events of Rise of Skywalker could go a long way in rewriting that film's divisive history.
Lucasfilm even recruited Damon Lindelof, the prolific writer behind The Leftovers, Watchmen, and the upcoming Lanterns, but that seemingly perfect union wasn't meant to be, and now we have more of a sense as to why. While appearing on The Ringer-Verse's"House of R" podcast, Lindelof definitively confirmed that he was"fired" by Lucasfilm after 2 years of working on the screenplay.
