Thirty-one young people have been killed by guns in the city of Harrisburg in the past five years.

“The increasing rates of firearm mortality are a longer-term trend and demonstrate that we continue to fail to protect our youngest population from a preventable cause of death,” saidwith the school’s Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention.

More than 4,300 individuals ages 1-19 died as the result of firearms in 2020, which includes suicides, homicides and unintentional deaths, according to the data. Researchers said drug overdoses and poisoning in children and adolescents increased by 83.6%, which is now the third leading cause of death.

For more than 60 years, car accidents have been the leading cause of death among young people, a number that has been dramatically decreasing since 2001. About 3,900 fatalities among children and adolescents were caused by car accidents in 2020.
