After a week of fighting the Crabapple Fire in windy and dry conditions, the fire is 100% contained, Fredericksburg officials said.
The Crabapple Fire that razed almost 10,000 acres in the Hill Country near Fredericksburg is 100% contained, authorities said. City of Fredericksburg officials said Friday evening that crews had fully contained the blaze, almost a week after it started.
The fire destroyed nearly 30 buildings and ravaged 9,858 acres of land in an area from Lower Crabapple Road to Farm-to-Market Road 1631 in Gillespie County. The fire started last Saturday about 8 miles from Fredericksburg, according to city spokesperson Sean Doerre. The Texas A&M Forest Service named the blaze after the area where it started, a “roadside start” near the 8700 block of Lower Crabapple Road. The cause of the fire is still unknown. In addition, 20 outbuildings were destroyed and four were damaged, according to the city. Much of South Texas was under a red flag warning throughout the week. Winds stoked the fire as crews fought it, prolonging the struggle. Winds died down on Thursday night, Fredericksburg Fire Chief Lynn Bizzell said in the city’s statement. “Although this fire may be contained, our hearts continue to go out to the people that lost homes, property and livestock,” Bizzell said. “Our area is still in extreme drought conditions, so we ask everyone to please be vigilant of anything that may start another fire.” Residents who were forced to evacuate were allowed to return to their properties on Monday night, and roads closed were reopened earlier in the day. Authorities urged people to “avoid the area unless it is necessary.” The Red Cross shelter at Zion Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg closed Monday afternoon after serving seven people, Doerre said. Neighboring counties Kendall and Kerr followed suit in the following days. Smaller fires broke out in other parts of the Hill Country. The largest was the Bootes fire in northern Kendall County. That fire burned around 120 acres before being fully contained on Wednesday, according to the Forest Service. Bigger fires ravaged the Texas Panhandle. The Windmill and High Lonesome fires both burned over 23,000 acres each before they were contained on Thursday. The city of Fredericksburg asked that donations be made to the Crabapple Disaster Fund to provide “emergency aid, essential supplies and long-term recovery assistance to help families rebuild their homes, restore their land and restart their businesses.” Donations to the fund can be made here through the OneStar Foundation and Rebuild Texas.
