WATCH | Fire destroys part of Tshwane shack suburb, leaving 250 people homeless
Two hundred and fifty people are homeless, with no possessions, after a fire tore through the Plastic View shack suburb in Tshwane on Saturday morning.
The City's Emergency Services Department said it had treated one person for smoke inhalation and three others for minor injuries, but 45 homes are ruined. The damage and potential injury could have been worse had it not been for the fire brigade containing the blaze after arriving at 4:30. Plastic View is a shack suburb in limbo, fending off repeated attempts at relocating the community without suitable alternate accommodation. There have also been attempts to redevelop the land, but the relocation plans stalled because residents close to the proposed relocation sites do not want them to move there. In the meantime, the City said it would help relieve the immediate emergency needs of victims, with the Department of Human Settlements also being notified.
