Fire destroyed much of Europe’s largest camp for asylum seekers
The blaze forced thousands of migrants to flee the Moria camp on Lesbos, highlighting Greece’s combustible mix of migration pressure, overcrowded camps and the coronavirus pandemic.
Greek authorities have reported no fatalities due to the fire, which left them scrambling to find shelter for the migrants. The cause of the blaze wasn’t clear, said Greek authorities. “The fires started as a result of discontent of some of the people hosted in Moria because of the isolation imposed after, with 1,900 tests during the previous days, 36 cases of Covid-19 were detected,” Greece’s deputy migration minister Giorgos Koumoutsakos told reporters.To Read the Full Story
