Firefighters arrived to find the $30 million yacht engulfed by flames, which threatened to spread to other luxury vessels.
Police are investigating the cause of a blaze that destroyed a super yacht owned by British-Australian billionaire Sir Michael Hintze on Sydney’s lower north shore on Saturday night.
Firefighters arrived to find the yacht fully engulfed by flames that threatened other luxury vessels at the Woolwich Dock after they responded to multiple triple-0 calls about a boat fire about 8.10pm.Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said crews managed to contain the blaze, but the $US30 million vessel –“Initial firefighting efforts were to not only extinguish the fire, but stop it spreading to a number of high-value vessels that were moored alongside the motor yacht.
Dewberry said the yacht had been filled with 4000 litres of diesel earlier on Saturday, which created a potential hazard that caused ongoing concern for fire crews.“It took so long [to extinguish the fire] because it’s a large vessel, and we had no access onto the yacht itself; it just wasn’t safe to get on board.
“The fuel loading of these vessels is quite high – fibreglass, plastics, foams, polyurethanes, any number of things you would associate with any [vessel] of luxury that has accommodation facilities.Peter RaeDewberry said it was too early to tell what caused the blaze; however, it wasn’t being treated as suspicious. Police from the marine area command continue to investigate the incident. The fire service is working with the Port Authority of NSW and the NSW Environmental Protection Agency.
