The Kingston community in Autauga County is echoing what many volunteer fire departments have been saying in recent years: We need volunteers.
AUTAUGA COUNTY, Ala. - Outside of Prattville, Autauga County has 10 fire departments to serve thousands of residents, but recruiting is more difficult than ever.
“Over the last 40 years there’s been a reduction in volunteer firefighters, almost 25 percent,” Old Kingston Volunteer Fire Department’s Assistant Chief Jeremy Day explained. “In that same time, call volumes have almost tripled.” “Other than that sense of obligation and that willingness to help your neighbor, is that when you come to a volunteer fire department, you will find a family,” said Day.
