Firefighters have kept the fire contained to the original building and are trying to determine when it will be safe to enter after a roof was damaged
A stubborn fire at an Otay Mesa battery storage facility has smoldered for five days and officials do not have an estimate as to when the fire will be out. Crews have not yet entered the building, which houses lithium ion batteries, since a fire ignited Wednesday afternoon at the Gateway Energy Storage Facility on Camino De La Fuente. Worries about a 'sagging roof' kept firefighters outside of the structure Sunday, said Cal Fire Capt Brent Pascua.
There was no firm estimate of how much longer the fire might smoulder. “Speaking with the experts, in the past they’ve had a few incidents like this, and it’s anywhere from seven days to a couple of weeks,” Pascua said. For days, crews have been pumping water into the building's fire-suppression system in order to suffocate the blaze and cool off the heated batteries. The initial fire was extinguished Thursday afternoon, but a flare-up later that night brought firefighters back to the scene.
