A public health advisory is in effect for the cities of Martinez and Pacheco due to a fire at the Martinez Refining Company, according to Contra Costa Health, issued on Saturday. The Martinez Refining Company reported a fire and flaring incident at the refinery, prompting a level 2 hazardous materials (hazmat) notification. The Contra Costa Health Department was alerted to the fire by the facility at 1:47 p.m., as stated in a Facebook post.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District dispatched inspectors to the site and issued an air quality advisory for both Contra Costa and Solano counties in response to the fire.\The district emphasized in a statement that smoke from the fire contains fine particulate matter and other harmful pollutants, posing a risk to public health. Exposure to smoke, even for brief periods, is considered unhealthy. Residents of the Bay Area are urged to prioritize their health by minimizing their exposure to smoke. Individuals with respiratory sensitivities may be particularly affected by the smoke. Some residents might experience irritation in their eyes, skin, nose, or throat. In such cases, they are advised to seek shelter indoors and rinse the affected area with water. Contra Costa Health indicated that most people are unlikely to experience any significant issues.\Contra Costa Health was notified by the appropriate agencies regarding the level 2 hazmat notification.
