Fire at Chula Vista apartment carport chars 10 vehicles, causes $500,000 in damage [Breaking]

Fire investigators are trying to determine what sparked a fire at a Chula Vista apartment complex early Sunday that caused $500,000 in damage when it charred a carport and 10 cars, officials said.

Five of the vehicles were completely destroyed while the other five were significantly damaged, Chula Vista Deputy Fire Chief Rick Ballard said Monday. The blaze was reported shortly after 2 a.m. at the complex on Kennedy Street near Second Avenue. When fire crews arrived, they saw flames shooting 40 to 50 feet into the air and called in a second alarm, initially believing the apartment building was on fire. However, when they got closer and saw it was the carport that was in flames, they canceled the additional units, Ballard said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. “We are still investigating,” Ballard said. “We don’t have a determination yet. They haven’t been able to lock it down.”
