California Nanotechnologies is changing the world of material science with its combination of cryogenic milling and Spark Plasma Sintering.
, we sit down with Christopher Melnyk. Chris is the Director of Business Development at California Nanotechnologies and the founder and CEO of Vestige Life Pendants.
He has co-authored several peer-reviewed research papers with world-leading commercial and academic researchers from UCLA, UCI, ARL, and Boeing, among others. He is also listed as the primary inventor of Cal Nano’s commercial Cryogenic Milling patent. This process is high-energy attrition ball milling at cryogenic temperatures, which provides unique benefits to traditional milling/mixing technology. It involves a lot of little hard balls being stirred by a paddle under very low temperatures.
“We can mix the sugar and the water crystals perfectly uniformly and homogeneously, and then we can just crush that all together and heat it up not enough to melt it but enough to push it all together. And now you have a block of 70% sugar water combination,” Chris explained. SPS is an advanced sintering and bonding technique that works with many materials, including metallic alloys, high-temperature ceramics, and high-entropy alloys. It involves applying pulsed electric current to heat materials quickly, allowing for the creation of dense, high-quality materials with fine microstructures.
“Well, SPS has a great way of eliminating that, and so normally when you if you were to hot press. You would see what’s called the previous particle boundaries,” he added. “Right now, the practical limits somewhere in that range some people talk about going a little bigger, but right now, somewhere in that kind of sixty centimeters range is the practical limit,” Chris explained.
