Fingers crossed: Eastbound state Route 78 could open mid-week

Drivers' nightmare to end after weeks of detours to replace aged underground storm drain system

State Route 78 drivers finally could see relief this week from the nightmare of detours and traffic congestion they have endured since the discovery of a storm-related sinkhole just west of College Boulevard on March 15.

Construction started with the westbound lanes, which remained shut down until April 5, when the work shifted to the eastbound lanes. The second half of the construction was predicted to take about three weeks, but has lasted more than a month. Caltrans officials said Friday the emergency project should end sometime in the next week.“We are scheduled to complete the paving on Sunday and striping on Monday,” said Caltrans public information officer Steve Welborn.

The total cost of the emergency repairs was estimated at $20 million, though the amount could increase because of the delays. Most of the money is available from the state’s Highway Operation and Protection Program.
