Finger: Texas Longhorns can find a bright side, even in Big 12 limbo
UT tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders and OU defensive back Key Lawrence will likely be gone from their respective teams when the Horns and Sooners join the SEC.Almost two years into a messy breakup, the unhappy parties still aren’t allowed to leave, for reasons some readers might find all too familiar. The only things standing between Texas, Oklahoma and a fresh start are lawyers and money.
It’s still a possibility that Texas and Oklahoma join the Southeastern Conference in time for the 2024 football season. The problem, as noted in reports from ESPN and The Athletic on Friday, is that negotiations involving the two schools, two TV networks and the Big 12 have stalled. And if you’re either Steve Sarkisian or Jimbo Fisher? The safest thing for your job security might be to avoid the other for as long as you can.
And really, that proves the point. Fisher and Sarkisian have weathered brutal recent seasons and embarrassing defeats, and still managed to keep their jobs. But for both head coaches right now, and maybe for the next couple of seasons, losing to the other would be an unforgivable sin.
