His historically bad performance has lots of company.

Are they really going to entrust every kick to a guy who just missed five extra points in a row?

Jones might be right. During the regular season, Maher was one of the most effective kickers in the league, making not only 50 of 53 PAT attempts but also 29 of 32 field-goal tries. When he finally converted an extra point after Dallas’ last touchdown Monday, could it have marked the end of a humiliating but ultimately harmless blip on the radar screen?

Entering the 2000 Major League Baseball playoffs, Ankiel was considered one of the game’s most promising young pitchers. As a 20-year-old, he struck out 194 batters in 175 innings during the regular season, finishing second in the National League rookie of the year balloting. And when St. Louis picked him to start Game 1 of the division series, against none other than Greg Maddux of Atlanta, nobody had any clue about the pending implosion.

St. Louis rallied to win that game, and prevailed in the series. But here’s where the Cowboys parallels might prove prescient. Convinced Ankiel had put his bad day behind him - that the “yips” were a fleeting thing - the Cardinals had him start Game 2 in the NL Championship Series against the Mets. Sax overcame his, and played a key role for the Dodgers for years afterwards. Knoblauch didn’t, and was limited to designated hitter during the Yankees’ World Series run in 2000.
