How much success would the Spurs and Manu had if he had played for another team?

SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS - SEPTEMBER 10: Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2022 enshrinee Manu Ginobili speaks during the 2022 Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony at Symphony Hall on September 10, 2022 in Springfield, Massachusetts. SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — For the first time in forever, Manu Ginobili couldn’t see the whole picture.

“I’m not here because I was super-special,” Ginobili said when he took the stage at Symphony Hall, but everyone in the room knew better, and so did millions of basketball fans on at least two continents. How many other skinny kids from Argentina could become the soul of an NBA dynasty, pushing and pulling the Hall of Famers around him to heights even they could not see as clearly as he did?

Ginobili, with his irrepressible humility, chalked much of that up to landing in the perfect place, at the perfect time, with the perfect franchise. The part of Ginobili’s track record that wasn’t “super-special” were numbers like points and rebounds and All-Star appearances. But he always had the capacity for more, and probably would have if he had been, say, a Boston Celtic.

But what set him apart — and what made him the ideal running mate with Duncan and Parker — was that Ginobilidifferently than just about anyone else. He attempted plays many never would dare, occasionally to Popovich’s exasperated chagrin.
