After NFL draft, Longhorns, Sooners and Aggies all look for any reason to believe.
For college football Program X , last week’s NFL draft provided a reason to believe. After a season in which the school won 12 games, it had a record 11 players selected. Clearly its coach knows how to identify and develop talent, and clearly that bodes well for the future. For Program Y , the draft provided a reason to believe. After a season in which it won 10 games, it had only three players selected.
The fifth just missed it, and probably should have made it. The correlation between most draft picks and most victories isn’t always so overwhelming. But more often than not, draft results tell us way more about the past than they do about the future. In the 2023 draft, TCU had the fourth-most players selected, which made sense, coming off a trip to the national championship game. How did the Horned Frogs do the next season? Emboldened by that big NFL splash, they went 5-7.
