is just the latest example of an obsession that began almost as soon as the ship sank in 1912.
They did weigh up the possibility of dropping some dynamite over the site in the hope of raising some of the bodies to the surface, but thankfully that plan was also dismissed. Until then, it had been assumed the ship sank in one piece – in fact, it had broken in two, the stern and the bow were around a third of a mile apart on the ocean floor.
In 1998, part of the Titanic’s hull was raised to the surface despite protests by survivors and relatives who said it was a sea grave that should be left alone. Tourist visits have been running since the 1990s through a company called Deep Ocean Expeditions at a cost of around 60,000 dollars per person.Up to 20 paying guests at a time took part in trips that involved setting sail from Saint Johns, Newfoundland, and lasted 12 days each.
Mr McCallum told CNN that Titanic dives finished in 2005 but there was a flurry of interest in 2012 to mark the centenary.
