A personal reflection on navigating grief during the holiday season, highlighting the journey of healing, the power of faith, and the possibility of finding purpose in pain.

For many, the Christmas season is a time of celebration, filled with laughter and the gathering of loved ones. However, for others, it can be a period of intense grief, magnifying the pain of loss and awakening memories that are difficult to bear. This time of year, often associated with peace and joy, can instead expose our deepest emotional wounds. Before the creation of Auntie Anne’s, I experienced a period of profound darkness that I believed I would never escape.

The loss of my 19-month-old daughter, Angie, created a void in my heart, making it seem as though genuine joy was forever out of reach. The overwhelming darkness of grief can convince us that all hope is lost, leaving us questioning if we will ever be able to mend ourselves. \Following my daughter’s death, I sought solace and guidance from our pastor, but tragically, I was taken advantage of and subjected to abuse for seven long years. This additional layer of trauma and betrayal only deepened my grief, leading me down a path of shame from which I felt there was no escape. I found myself isolated, consumed by secrets and the pervasive darkness that had become my reality. \It was God’s unconditional love that became the turning point, the guiding light that led me out of the tunnel of grief. His salvation offered restorative healing, setting me on the path toward wholeness. The act of confessing my story, sharing my secrets, and placing my trust in God enabled me to move forward, allowing me to receive forgiveness from others, from God, and ultimately, from myself. While my healing journey was not without its setbacks, after taking the initial step of speaking my truth, I never completely retreated back into the darkest depths where I began. Trauma and pain do not have quick fixes, but it is possible to experience genuine well-being, even after enduring pain for extended periods. Choosing to be well doesn’t mean we will never again feel the impact of our pain. My husband Jonas and I will forever carry the grief of losing our daughter, but the way we grieve has evolved as we experience each new season of life without Angie, particularly during the holidays. I cannot claim to understand all of God's mysteries; I am not a theologian. However, I can speak with certainty about what I have experienced. It was amidst the most unimaginable suffering that I found Him. He was more loving and more trustworthy than I could have ever conceived. My connection with Him, and later, my connections with others, gave me the freedom to process my story, to confess, and to make storytelling a constant part of my ongoing journey. Authentic and understanding communities can be lifelines, offering crucial support as we navigate the new normal of well-being in the wake of grief. For far too long, I saw the world only through the darkened lens of my pain. Slowly but surely, each truth revealed, each confession made, each act of forgiveness, and each step towards wholeness allowed a little more light to enter my life. It was within my pain that I discovered my purpose. \Back when I was desperately pleading with God to remove my grief and trying to repair the damage shame had inflicted on my life, I never imagined that I would eventually find peace amidst all that pain. Over time, I shifted my focus from trying to eliminate the pain to asking myself what lessons it could teach me. And that is when I discovered something far more miraculous than simply having my pain lifted...I realized He could redeem it. Redemption is not about reaching perfection, because we learn nothing from it. Rather, redemption is the process of the script changing, the moment we can finally experience the beauty that is possible because of the pain, rather than in spite of it. I could not have predicted how the pain that had isolated me would later facilitate a deep sense of connection with God and with other people. The secrets that once held me captive in isolation now compel me to strive for a life of authenticity. The very story I was once tempted to escape altogether has shaped me into someone who can now make a positive impact in the world. Through the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus, we are offered redemption. This time of year serves as a poignant reminder of that redemption, of the burden of our pain that He bears, and that we do not have to face our grief alone. It is impossible to fully comprehend all the tragedy in this world, yet it is possible to achieve a degree of peace. The joy of the holidays can quickly transform into a world of pain when a loss is keenly felt, and our hurt and pain seem overwhelming. When we allow pain to define us, we get stuck. When we try to solve or prevent it, we often experience disappointment. But when we begin to make peace with our pain, transformation becomes possible, at last
