age 50 and older in the United States, up from the 3 million estimated in 2021.
“A big part of care management is health care advocacy and linking people with resources in the community,” Valoff said. “We are aware that LGBTQ older adults are oftentimes isolated from people in their biological families, they’re more likely to live alone and to not be partnered versus other non-LGBTQ older adults.”
About 84 percent of those polled expressed at least some concern about discrimination. At 64 percent, transgender and non-binary older adults were the most likely portion of the community to feel extremely concerned about being discriminated against. Because of issues related to ageism and homophobia, Stewart said LGBTQ seniors are an “invisible population” who have often aged in secrecy or without the benefit of professional support services.
