School holidays and Saturday’s two sell-out footy finals have put a squeeze on the city’s accommodation, with some hotels charging 600 per cent the normal room rate.

Brisbane has all but run out of hotel rooms for the AFL and NRL double-header on Saturday night – and the few that remain cost as much as 600 per cent more than usual.

Brisbane’s relatively small working stadia meant ticket sales for both finals was capped at a combined 85,000. The overwhelming majority of tickets were set aside for local supporters and corporates, who would go home to their own beds. “Not all accommodation will need to be located in central Brisbane,” a spokesman for Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said when asked by this masthead for the plan. “Nor will every bed be required for the entirety of four weeks of Olympic and Paralympic competition.
