The Cardinals leaned on their defense to take down the Wolfpack, moving to 5-0 for the first time since 2013 in the process.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Traveling to NC State for their first true road game of the season, the Louisville football program was able to ride their defense to a big win, capturing a 13-10 victory to move to 5-0 for the first time since 2013.
I'm going to break down the defense first, because as anyone who watched the game knows, they willed Louisville to victory and were almost single-handedly the reason they won this game. I'd been a little critical of this side of the ball to start the season, but Ron English and the rest of the defensive coaches put together a great game plan.
I remember heading into the season thinking the linebacking corps would be this defense's Achilles heel. But this unit has played exceptionally well. T.J. Quinn was all over the place against NC State making an impact both against the run and in coverage. Jaylin Alderman continued his good start to the season, and had a bone-jarring hit. Even Stanquan Clark, who played just two defensive snaps, tallied tackles on both snaps.
Okay, now we have to address the offense. Before I get into the players themselves, let's talk about the play calling. I've been highly complimentary regarding Jeff Brohm's play calling ability so far this season, but this was the first game of the season where it left a little to be desired. I get that Jawhar Jordan had next to no success against the NC State front seven.
That being said, it was great to see Chris Bell have the game that he did. It's important for Plummer to continue building a repertoire with receivers not named Jamari Thrash, and Bell is slowly becoming a reliable option. It was good to see the tight ends get involved early, but I would have liked to see them play a more pronounced role as the game went on.
