The Aztecs guard had until May 31 to withdraw from the NBA Draft to retain his college eligibility, but there was no announcement about teammate Jaedon LeDee
The first was whether to enter the transfer portal before the May 11 deadline and chase potentially lucrative NIL payments like hundreds of other college players this spring. His father said the family received offers ranging from $175,000 to $1 million but opted against taking them.
.. “But I think the Butler family is built just a little differently. I thank God for that, I really do. My son, he wants to be an Aztec. He’s an Aztec for life.“Why take my son out of a situation that’s great for him? We really don’t know what’s on the other end. The grass is not always greener, we all know that. It sounds good, it looks good, but it may be AstroTurf, it may not be real grass.” San Diego State’s Lamont Butler celebrates with teammates after making the game-winning shot to to beat Florida Atlantic 72-71 in the Final Four. The next decision was whether to remain in the draft. He had workouts with the Memphis Grizzlies, Milwaukee Bucks and Utah Jazz, then participated in a Pro Day at Impact Basketball last weekend that was attended by representatives from all 30 NBA teams. Butler currently does not appear in most mock drafts, nor was he invited to the G League or NBA pre-draft combines. In prior years, that would be a strong hint to return to college. But the NBA has been expanding rosters and just added a third two-way contract in effort to promote in-league development. That, in turn, has complicated the decision for many prospects with remaining college eligibility. In the end, though, Butler decided that his best development was at SDSU. Another consideration: The 2024 NBA Draft is expected to be among the weakest in years.“These past three years at San Diego State have been amazing,” Butler said in his Instagram video. “I remember my freshman year during COVID, when there were no fans allowed at the games and I got my first taste of the NCAA Tournament, to now being able to hang multiple banners and being part of history by making it to the national championship game for the first time. “ endless amounts of memories on the court of making plays, throwing lobs, hitting game winners and, most importantly, winning championships. But the most special part of my Aztec career is the relationships I’ve been able to make over the years. The bonds I’ve been able to make with my coaches and teammates have been life-changing and allowed me to grow as both a player and a person.”That solidifies the Aztecs’ backcourt, with Darrion Trammell back and the addition of. Sophomore Miles Byrd showed flashes in practice and is expected to contribute this season, and incoming freshman guard B.J. Davis is considered a high-ceiling prospect who is able to score at all three levels. The frontcourt has been the area where the Aztecs took the biggest hit. Starting center Nathan Mensah ran out of eligibility, and starting forward Keshad Johnson opted to transfer to Arizona for his extra “COVID” season. Aguek Arop, the do-it-all forward off the bench, is gone, too.from Campbell with one year of eligibility left. But he weighs just 193 pounds and is more a “stretch 4” who operates on the perimeter than an intimidating low-post presence. The Aztecs used a four-man rotation for the two post positions last season, and the only one not definitively gone is LeDee. Like Butler, he provisionally entered the NBA Draft with the option of returning to college if he withdraws by May 31. He went home to Texas after the semester ended in early May but has since returned to San Diego and was expected to announce his return with Butler. That didn’t happen Monday.
