SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Cloud's headaches in Final Fantasy 7 Remake aren't just random: there's a very specific reason for these sudden bursts of pain. Cloud is a very conflicted character, and throughout the game, he suffers from splitting headaches at various moments. The original game had Cloud experiencing the same thing, but it's even more drastic and dramatic in the Remake.
In Crisis Core, Cloud becomes friends with Zack as a new recruit, and the pair are sent on a mission with Sephiroth. That mission ends in the Nibelheim Incident, when Sephiroth learns that his DNA has been spliced with the alien Jenova's, and razes Cloud's entire hometown. After confronting Sephiroth, Cloud and Zack are captured by Shinra and put through Professor Hojo's experiments for years.
Cloud's Headaches May Be Caused By His Connections To Aerith & Sephiroth Cloud's headaches may also be connected to his relationship with Sephiroth, a fellow former SOLDIER and the antagonist of FF7. As seen in the first chapter of FF7 Rebirth, Cloud and Sephiroth first meet on their way to the Nibelheim mission. Sephiroth, seeing Cloud as a fellow victim and potential ally, spares him in the ensuing rampage.
The ending of FF7 Remake provides a little more nuance to Sephiroth's plan. Much like Cloud, Sephiroth has visions of the future. Sephiroth knows that in the canon version of events , he's fated to fail. Rejecting this course of events, Sephiroth wants Cloud to work with him to change the future. Not everyone can see the Whispers, however. Aerith swears she's the only one at first, but after Cloud meets her, he starts seeing them, too. While the Whispers are part of the general mythos surrounding FF7's multiple timelines, there's nothing to suggest they're the direct cause of Cloud's headaches. The headaches and the Whispers appear at different times, and the Whispers are done away with long before Cloud's timeline confusion is resolved.
And despite less intense headaches, Cloud continues to experience the same kind of cognitive dissonance, with similar visual and sound effects playing when his past is called into question, or he sees a vision of his future. When one of these visions comes to pass at the end of FF7 Rebirth, scratching noises and distortion effects appear again.
