Final call for team SA: Olympic qualifiers wrap as athletes secure spots for Paris Games
Miranda Coetzee secured her Olympic ticket at the Senior African Athletics Championship in Douala in CameroonToday marks the last day for Team SA Olympic hopefuls to secure seats on that flight by meeting the qualifying standards for the Paris Games scheduled to get under way in France next month.
Unfortunately, other than the Diamond League being invitation-only events, the upcoming meets will be outside the Paris Games’ qualifying window. The next series of the one-day international meets are in Paris on 7 July and the principality of Monaco on 12 July, as well as in London, UK, on 20 July. According to the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee , the Olympic and Paralympic governing body responsible for delivering national teams at multi-coded sporting events, about 140 athletes are set to represent the country at the Games. The Olympics run from 26 July to 11 August in the French capital.Leon Fleiser, Sascoc’s general manager of high performance, told City Press this week that they would announce the final Team SA in the coming week.
Coetzee is the latest to have qualified via the entry standard. The 26-year-old, from Rustenburg in the North West, secured her ticket to the 400m semifinals last Saturday. She clocked 50.91s to dip under the qualification standard of 50.95s.Her win accounted for Team SA’s 20 medals in total: seven gold, five silver and eight bronze.
Thipe reckoned Cotezee’s experience at the World Championships would help ease stage fright when she lines up for the Olympics. The repechage pits teams that came very close but failed to get through to the next round of a competition.
