.FilmFest919 goes drive-in only for 2020 edition

For Film Fest 919 in Chapel Hill — a city which uses the area code 919, hence the event's name — the third time is... well, going to be different.

The fest, which in its first two years managed to attract Oscar hopefuls to North Carolina by planting itself in middle of Oscar season, will not be able to take place on and around the UNC-Chapel Hill campus this year due to the ongoing pandemic — but, unlike many other 2020 film fests, including Cannes and Telluride, it will be moving forward in a different format.

Thanks to financial support from Northwood Ravin, a Chapel Hill real estate management company, Film Fest 919 will be holding socially-distanced screenings over a period of several weeks at two drive-in theater locations, Drive-in at Carraway Village and The Green at Southern Village, the fest announced in a statement.

The fest will kick off on Wednesday, Oct. 14 and offer screenings each Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday through Saturday, Oct. 31. "With theaters still under state mandate to stay closed, over the past several months we have explored many options to produce a COVID-appropriate festival where we can provide the health and safety of our community while giving film lovers a new and exciting theatrical experience to look forward to,” fest founders
