From navigating complex family dynamics to tackling addiction and exploring queer love, three San Diego filmmakers are putting Filipino American representation front and center at the San Diego Filipino Film Festival.

Marissa Roxas, who wrote and directed “You+Me Will Always Be Back Then,” talks to an actor on set in this undated photo.

De Guzman, now working in Los Angeles, says San Diego remains an integral part of his artistic identity. “It feels really awesome to be coming back to my hometown. That's where I grew up, and that's where my community is," he said."My community has really laid a strong foundation to who I am, not just as a person, but as an artist."Marissa Roxas, another featured filmmaker, grew up in the Carmel Mountain area and still lives in San Diego.

"There are a lot of stories that are visually really cool, but I think we're in a space where we can diversify them," Lace said. These films don’t stray far from reality — though there are some plot twists. They focus on characters who reflect real people and real experiences. Lace’s"Fidel" is a fictional story rooted in personal experiences. While inspired by his time as a caretaker for his grandmother, the film is a reimagined narrative, named after his late uncle. Shot in his childhood home in San Diego, it explores themes of family and loss.
