The File Hills Qu'Appelle Tribal Council in Saskatchewan has declared its inaugural Languages in Our Lands Week to begin Monday. Indigenous Sask
Languages in Our Lands Week calls on all residents of Treaty 4 territory to partake in an act of celebration of language.
FHQTC will also host a mid-week event, planting 11 trees on Treaty 4 Grounds Reserve 77, west of Fort Qu’Appelle, on Wednesday. The trees represent each of the council’s member nations, to honour their languages and raise awareness for climate change. All Indigenous languages spoken in Canada are currently considered at risk, as declared by the United Nations. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada attributes this to ongoing impacts of colonial policies, like the residential school system, that sought to destroy culture through targeted assimilation.
Statistics Canada analysis found that those with an Indigenous mother tongue are declining, but the number of people who indicated an Indigenous dialect as a second language is rising, representing about one quarter of all speakers overall.Article content
