Malakai Stovall is fighting for his life after being severely injured in a house fire early Monday, July 29, 2024. Rochester , N.Y. — A 5-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being severely burned in a house fire on the city's northeast side.

The family of Malakai Stovall is asking the community for help in finding the people responsible for the horrifying incident. "I am asking the whole city of Rochester to pray and get answers for my only child, Malakai Stovall," said Brianna Akers, the boy's mother. "He was a very lively little boy, he is full of energy, and he is definitely fighting as much as he can, and he is going to make it through."Crews responded to a duplex on Portland Avenue around 2 a.m. Monday and found the home engulfed in flames. Malakai was trapped on the second floor and was rescued by firefighters. He was then brought to Strong Memorial Hospital, where is he on a ventilator in life-threatening condition."So many people have failed my baby," Akers said. "This was not an accident; this was an intentional fire set, not an accident. My baby is suffering from city violence that had nothing to do with us." "We were on our way back when we got a call from one of the neighbors that the house was in flames," Forbes said."We are just asking for help," Forbes said. "We lost everything in the fire, and if we lose him too it’s going to be—" "Everything," Akers said. "The whole house." "My baby was up there for 21 minutes with no heartbeat," Akers said. "I don’t want to do this anymore."is set up for Malakai's care. Anyone with information as to the cause of the fire is encouraged to call the Rochester Police Department Major Crimes Unit at 428-7157 or email MajorCrimes@CityofRochester.gov.
