Fighting back tears, Stagg’s Rodrigo Hernandez scores biggest goal of his life. ‘This is my proudest moment.’

Rodrigo Hernandez smashed home a rocket volley to send Stagg to a 1-0 win over Bloom in Saturday's Class 3A Joliet West Sectional final.

For more than three years, Rodrigo Hernandez was the outsider looking in for Stagg. Continually consigned to the Chargers’ JV team, the senior forward was left to wonder whether the chance to play on the varsity level was ever going to be within his grasp. “Ever since I was a freshman, I wanted to be on the varsity, so that was very hard to experience that,” he said. “I accepted it and I worked hard. I waited patiently.

“We fought and we played hard, and I thought we were going to get something in the second half. I just felt like they wanted it more than we did.” Senior central defender Sebastian Talaga was a crucial cog for Stagg in shutting down a Bloom attack that produced 117 goals this season.
