Leonora’s ThroatCancer diagnosis stunned her doctors — but it didn’t slow her down. Fighting a cancer that rarely targets Black women has made her a braver human.
The diagnosis was devastating, yet there was just the smallest sliver of relief to finally know what was going on. My symptoms had already bulldozed my life, causing me to pause my quest to get my teaching certification. That meant losing my teaching job and having to go on disability. My once independent and prosperous life was thrown into peril. I risked losing my home and my car.Thankfully my friends, family, sorority sisters and church community stepped up to cover all my expenses.
I then realized that I had a choice: I could either own my illness and fight it tooth and nail with dignity and grace, or I could give in to self-pity and resentment. But it wasn’t as simple as just snapping my fingers and becoming brave. To build up my spirit, I needed to deepen my relationship with God.
Unfortunately, the chemoradiation therapy didn’t get rid of the cancer, and my only viable option was immunotherapy or the laryngectomy. Because I believe surgery should always be the last resort, I opted for immunotherapy. But it didn’t sit well with my body. And so, here I am, looking at the last resort: surgery.

Russia Hits Ukraine's Black Sea Port Despite Grain DealRussian missiles have struck Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odesa just hours after Moscow and Kyiv signed deals to allow grain exports to resume from there. A Ukrainian spokesperson described Saturday’s attack as a “spit in the face” to Turkey and the United Nations, which brokered the deal. The Ukrainian military says two Russian cruise missiles hit the port’s infrastructure and Ukrainian air defenses brought down two others. Elsewhere, Russia fired missiles Saturday at an airfield and railway in central Ukraine, killing at least three people, while Ukraine launched rocket strikes on river crossings in a Russian-occupied region. Russian forces are blocking 1,200 vehicles carrying fleeing Ukrainians, and a local official says four people have died waiting in the high heat.
