FIFA reveal plans to introduce service that will help protect World Cup players from online abuse
'Self-indulgent' Ronaldo interview shows Man United star ‘is not a very nice person’Ivan Toney: Brentford striker charged over 232 alleged breaches of betting rulesNeymar names Kane and surprise star as favourite England players ahead of World CupThe 34-year-old’s family were unfortunately the subject of online abuse and threats in his home country, so much so that he made a return to England having previously played for Chelsea and Arsenal.
He said: “I was suffering a lot, and my family were suffering a lot because people started attacking us on social media, attacking my family, my daughters, and that’s why I’m standing now with FIFA to see if you can stop these kinds of things.” FIFA and FIFPRO produced independent reports that were published in June this year, with the results showing that social media abuse directed at players at international tournaments has been on the rise.
The service was introduced as a result of their findings and FIFA will monitor the accounts of all players competing at the World Cup, with any offensive comments that they scan being reported to social media sites and law authorities.
