Devastating wildfires fueled by strong winds ripped through Southern California, causing widespread destruction and prompting mass evacuations. The fires claimed at least two lives and threatened tens of thousands of structures.

Devastating wildfires swept through Southern California early Wednesday, destroying more than 1,000 structures and killing at least two people. Residents fled through flames, ferocious winds, and towering clouds of smoke as multiple blazes raged across the metropolitan area, from the Pacific Coast to Pasadena. Thousands of firefighters battled the inferno, with the Los Angeles Fire Department calling for off-duty personnel to assist.

Weather conditions prevented firefighting aircraft from taking flight, hindering the firefighting effort. Officials hoped to deploy them later Wednesday. In addition to the two deaths, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone reported numerous injuries. The fires threatened at least 28,000 structures, leaving behind images of destruction overnight, including collapsed luxury homes engulfed in flames. At least 70,000 residents were ordered to evacuate as flames spread towards densely populated and affluent neighborhoods. Hollywood celebrities, including Mark Hamill, Mandy Moore, and James Woods, were among those forced to flee. The home of Vice President Kamala Harris was included in an evacuation zone, although it was unoccupied, according to her spokesperson. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna emphasized the priority of saving lives, stating that hundreds of deputies were assisting with evacuations and emergency responses
