A fire at a fiberglass swimming pool manufacturing facility in Franklin Township, New Jersey, led to the evacuation of 700 students from nearby schools. Hazmat crews tested air quality, and while no issues were reported, the incident highlights the potential health risks associated with burning fiberglass materials.

A fire ripped through a fiberglass swimming pool manufacturing business in Gloucester County , New Jersey , prompting the evacuation of 700 students from nearby schools. Hazmat crews were deployed to test the air quality in the affected area. Authorities reported no air quality issues as of Friday morning following the blaze at North East Pool Builders, located on the 800 block of Harding Highway/Route 40 in Franklin Township.

The fire, first reported by an off-duty firefighter on Thursday night, sent a large plume of black smoke into the sky. A worker at the business, which employs around a dozen people, provided responders with a list of hazardous materials inside, including resins and other substances used to make fiberglass pool shells. These materials can pose health risks, such as respiratory problems, skin irritation, and stomach pain. Exposure signs include eye irritation, sore throat, rashes, and coughing. As a precaution, two schools—Main Road School and Our Lady of Mercy Academy—and residences within a one-mile radius of the site were evacuated Thursday. Students returned to class at both schools on Friday. Air quality monitoring was conducted both inside and outside the schools before and during the evacuations. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. While the fire was declared under control by 11:15 a.m. Thursday, it rekindled that night, requiring firefighters to return to the scene. Local officials stated that no residents reported health issues, but one resident next to the fire requested air quality monitoring on Friday morning. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is aware of the fire and investigating the incident. According to township police chief and emergency management coordinator Matt DeCesari, the township had previously been called to the site for reports of foul odors and debris coming from a smoke stack
