Senator John Fetterman has become a co-sponsor of a Republican-led bill named after Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student killed by an illegal migrant last year. The bill, known as the Laken Riley Act, aims to hold the Department of Homeland Security accountable for the custody of illegal migrants who commit theft and empower state attorneys general to seek legal action against the federal government for failing to enforce the law.
Sen. John Fetterman , D-Pa., is now a co-sponsor of a Republican-led bill named in honor of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, his office told The National News Desk (TNND) Tuesday. Riley was killed last year after she was attacked by an illegal migrant while jogging near the University of Georgia. Jose Ibarra was convicted of murder in November and sentenced to life in prison.
Republicans following Riley's death slammed President Joe Biden’s border policies, claiming the killing was a result of the administration's failure to secure the southern border. The House is expected to vote Tuesday on legislation known as the Laken Riley Act, which would charge the U.S. Department of Homeland Security with taking custody of illegal migrants who commit theft. It would also allow state attorneys general to sue for injunctive relief if the federal government fails to uphold the law.Sen. Fetterman, according to his office, has joined his Republican colleagues in support of the bill. Laken Riley’s story is a tragic reminder of what’s at stake when our systems fail to protect people,” his office wrote in a statement. “No family should have to endure the pain of losing a loved one to preventable violence.” “Immigration is what makes our country great,” it added. “I support giving authorities the tools to prevent tragedies like this one while we work on comprehensive solutions to our broken system.” Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., who introduced the companion version in the House, thanked the senator for his support via X. The congressman also introduced the bill last year. “This bill sells itself, but I will be living in the Senate hallways until it passes if need be,” he wrote. “Very grateful for @SenFettermanPA. Now we need Georgia's Senators to step up.”in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in March calling on the Senate to pass the bil
